  • Summer Fun & Safety – Part 4

Playing outside is one of the best ways to enjoy the summer, unfortunately that’s where the bugs like to be as well. Bees, wasps, insects, ants and ticks can be annoying when you are trying to have a good time. Most bites usually only cause some minor discomfort but still tell your parent if you have been bit by any bug. Here are some ways to stay out of their way, and hopefully they will stay out of yours.

    1. Wear bug spray when outside. Using a spray that has the ingredient DEET is best, make sure the product has 10-30% DEET, less than that usually doesn’t work well and more than that can be harmful. Be careful not to get it into your eyes or mouth.

    2. Avoid playing near places the bugs like to be such as gardens, flowery bushes, and garbage cans. Tell an adult if you see a bee hive or bunch of bees or wasps in one area.

    3. Bees and wasps sting when they are upset, so don’t swat at them or chase them.

    4. Avoid wearing sweet smelling perfumes or having open containers of food and drinks hanging around. Bugs really love that!

    5. If a ball or toy goes into the bushes or a place where there are a lot of bugs, ask an adult for help.

    6. If you find a tick on you, have an adult assist you with removing the tick. Wash the area with water and soap. Call a doctor if you develop a rash or feel sick. Rarely ticks, such as the deer tick, can carry germs that can make you sick. So it is important to check your body everyday for ticks.

By following the above recommendations, there is no need to run indoors when the bugs are flying about.
