Not only do kids get a lot of calories from fast food, the foods they are most likely to choose provide “empty calories” from fried foods, refined grains and sugary beverages. Nutrient-rich whole fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat milk often go missing when families “drive through” instead of dine at home.

According to a recent study, fast food has supplied the biggest increase in calories in kids’ diets over the past 30 years. Children now get more calories from fast food than they do from school meals! It’s time for parents to reconsider their approach to dining out and fast food. Below are some tips to get you started.     The cooler mornings and evenings means that summer is winding down and school is just around the corner. Summer is usually a time of staying up late and sleeping in, so getting up for school can be challenging. Getting enough sleep is extremely important when it comes to doing well in school, as much as staying physically active and eating nutritiously.

    Most kids need 9-10 hours of sleep per night, but many get less than that because of all the distractions from TV, computers and video games. Not getting enough sleep can make concentrating in school very difficult and leave you with little energy to do your work and be active.
